Hockey benefit games to be held Friday, Saturday

October 23, 2012
The Journal

NEW ULM - On Feb. 3 1995, the Mankato West hockey team suffered a great tragedy when sophomore John Janavaras died from bacterial meningitis during a outbreak in Mankato that infected a total of nine people.

Three weeks later on Feb. 23, 1995, Mankato West earned a historic 3-1 upset win against New Ulm in the playoffs, a game that the Scarlets dedicated to Janavaras.

On Friday Oct. 26 and Saturday Oct. 27, the original players from the Mankato West and New Ulm teams that played each other in 1995 will hold a two-game, goodwill rematch to benefit local hockey organizations and the John Janavaras Scholarship Fund. The game on Friday will be played at All Seasons Arena in Mankato and the Saturday game will be held at New Ulm Civic Center.

Both games start at 7 p.m. Tickets will be $5 for adults, $3 for children aged 5-17 and free for children under five years of age.

Further information about the event can be found by searching "The Greatest Rematch" on Facebook.

On Dec. 22, 2011, Roger Dier released his book on the John Janavaras story, titled "Scarlet Ice." Copies of "Scarlet Ice" will be available for purchase at each game and players will be available to autograph copies.
