Sam Vanderwerf

SPRINGFIELD - Sam Vanderwerf, 101, of Springfield, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012, at St. John Lutheran Home in Springfield.

A celebration of life will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 20, at Sturm Funeral Home in Springfield with burial in the Springfield City Cemetery.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.

Military Honors by John Watson American Legion Post 257.

Sam Vanderwerf was born Aug. 24, 1911, in Pleasantville, Iowa, to Pete and Anna (Hayenga) Vanderwerf.

He served with the U.S. Army from 1942-1945 and saw action in North Africa and Italy.

He is survived by stepdaughter Barbara Fonken of Rochester; stepson Bruce Jahn of Cloquet; and one granddaughter.
