MVL competes at Madelia meet

MADELIA - The Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Sleepy Eye St. Mary's/Sleepy Eye/New Ulm Cathedral boys and girls cross country teams competed in the Jayhawk Invitational in Madelia on Thursday afternoon.

The MVL boys' team finished seventh out of eight teams and were led by Peter Finken with a time of 18:30, good enough for 21st place. Sam Bernau took 41st in 19:38, Caleb Grefe was 48th in 19:59, Jacob Grefe finished 51th in 20:06 and Zack Scharlemann took 54th in 20:12.

The MVL girls team took third place out of six teams. Talia Otto finished seventh with a time of 16:27 and Cheyenne Bjorkland took 19th in 17:03. Brianna Holtmeer took 20th and Alexa Dierson took 21st in 17:05 and 17:09, respectively. Maria Muske rounded off the group in 40th place with a time of 18:54.

The SM/SE/NUC boys' team was led by Stephen Joyce, who finished 29th in 19:07. Nick DeMaris finished 35th in 19:19, Brandon Roiger finished 45th in 19:44 and Zach Long finished 73rd in 22:01.

Kari Schumacher was the lone runner for SM/SE/NUC's girls team and finished in 10th place in a time of 16:37.

Both teams will compete in the Tomahawk Conference meet Tuesday at Winthrop.
