Something new for Oktoberfest

Festival starts Friday

October 4, 2012
By Josh Moniz - Staff Writer , The Journal

NEW ULM - The 2012 Oktoberfest in New Ulm will feature several new elements in its festivities.

The festival will be held on this coming Friday and Saturday, and on Friday, Oct. 12 and Saturday. 13.

Events take place at the New Ulm Holiday Inn from 6 p.m. to midnight on the Fridays, and from noon Saturday until closing at 1 a.m. Sunday.

The New Ulm Chamber of Commerce will host events from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.this Saturday at the intersection of Center and Minnesota streets in downtown New Ulm. Musical performers include Dain's Dutchmen, Schell's Hobo Band and City Mouse.

Members of the New Ulm Actors Community Theater will dress as chimney sweeps and march in the German-American Day parade on Saturday. The chimney sweep was selected because of the legend that it is a person's lucky day if they encounter a chimney sweep. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at the Glockenspiel and moves south down Minnesota Street.

The second weekend will boast events like a children's parade from the downtown parking area to the youth activities at the Glockenspiel. Boy Scouts will work with the National Guard to provide a climbing wall.

Also during the second weekend, the stores along Minnesota Street will participate in an informal scavenger hunt where participants try to find which store is hosting one of series of quilts. When all the quilts are discovered, participants can submit their list as a ticket to a raffle for prizes.

Traditional music at the downtown site on the Saturdays and at the Holiday Inn will be featured. However, a break from that music will be the band City Mouse with a special performance on Saturday, Oct. 6 from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in downtown.

In addition to traditional brats and sauerkraut, there will be two new food vendors at the downtown site - a specialty meat supplier and Hope and Faith Floral, which will provide its roasted nuts and home-made fudge.
