MLC volleyball sweeps North Central
MINNEAPOLIS - The Martin Luther College volleyball team came back from a tough loss Friday night to dominate North Central on Saturday in three games by the scores of 25-6, 25-10 and 25-20.
Heather Danell finished with a team-best nine kills, while Rebecca Engelbrecht added eight kills in two sets. Miranda Maasz finished with 23 assists, while MacCartney Mendolla had 10 to help MLC hit .308 as a team on the day.
The Knights (9-8 overall, 3-1 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play) will return to action at 7 p.m. Friday when they host St. Scholastica.
MLC football tops Saints
ABERDEEN, S.D. - The Martin Luther College football team beat Presentation by the score of 17-13 Saturday afternoon.
The Knights debuted a different style of offense in the game, with Luke Rothe playing quarterback and finishing with 332 total yards (227 passing and 105 yards rushing).
Presentation led off the scoring on a 70-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead less than five minutes into the game.
MLC responded with a 65-yard, six-play drive capped by a 22-yard scoring strike from Rothe to Scott Henrich to tie the game at 7-7.
The air attack struck again for the Knights in the second quarter, with Rothe hitting Christopher Arndt from two yards out to finish a 13-play drive and give MLC a 14-7 halftime lead.
The Saints made a big play on special teams in the third quarter when Keenan Honore returned a punt 85 yards for a score, but Presentation missed the extra point to allow the Knights to keep a one-point lead at 14-13.
Shawn Scherer iced the game for the Knights with 6:52 to play in the fourth quarter with a 26-yard field goal to give MLC the final 17-13 margin it would hold the rest of the way.
Rothe led the MLC ground attack, which finished with 143 yards rushing for the game.
Micah Plocher, Dan Rodewald and Arndt each had three catches in the game for 50, 41 and 26 yards, respectively. Rothe finished the day 16-for-26 passing with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Defensively, the Knights kept the Saints off the board in the final three quarters and held Presentation (1-4) to 273 total yards for the day. Derek Loewen led the MLC defense with 11 tackles, including two tackles for loss and one sack. Conrad Dewey added nine tackles, while Caleb Stern and Paul Spaude each had seven tackles.
MLC (2-3) will play at Eureka at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
St. Scholastica bombards Knights women's soccer
DULUTH - The Martin Luther College women's soccer team had a day to forget at St. Scholastica, losing 12-0 to the eight-time defending conference champions Saturday afternoon.
Casey Mitchell scored four goals for St. Scholastica?(7-3-1, 6-1), which held a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Andrea Beatt scored three straight goals in the first 16 minutes of the second half, and Mitchell scored her final three goals to wrap up the win.
Casey Sauer picked up the only shot for MLC in the match, as the Knights were outshot 37-1 .
MLC (4-6 overall, 3-3 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play) will host Bethany Lutheran at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.
MLC men's soccer shut down by Saints
DULUTH - The Martin Luther College men's soccer team lost at St. Scholastica 6-0 Friday.
The Saints (9-2, 7-0) had a strong offensive performance from Andrew Jenkins, who scored three goals in the match, with Joe Watt adding two scores and an assist.
St. Scholastica outshot MLC 34-2, including a 19-0 edge in shots on goal. Eric Hahn stopped 13 shots in goal for the Knights.
MLC (2-8 overall, 1-5 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference play) will return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday when it hosts Bethany Lutheran.
