FAIRMONT - The New Ulm girls soccer team clinched the South Central Conference for the fourth time in five years as the Eagles defeated Fairmont 3-1 Thursday in SCC action.
New Ulm finished with 17 shots on goal and goalkeeper Shelby Smith finished with four saves as the Eagles dominated the offensive play.
The Eagles got on the board first when Peyton Lewis scored off of a corner kick from Nicole Moldstad in the eighth minute.
New Ulm went up 2-0 in the second half when Monica Illikman netted a penalty kick. After Fairmont scored to cut the deficit to 2-1, the Eagles added an insurance goal from Hannah Paustian, who scored on an assist from Illikman.
The Eagles meet up with section foe Mankato East at 5 p.m. Monday in Mankato. The Eagles are currently second in the section standings behind the Cougars and section seedings come out next week.
