WINTHROP - A 13-year-old Winthrop boy died Monday afternoon from injuries received after he was struck by a semi while riding his bicycle along Highway 15 near Winthrop on Saturday.

The family of Jacob Weber, son of John and Karla Weber, issued the following statement through Hennepin County Medical Center.

"Our son, brother and friend was injured while riding his bicycle on Saturday, September 15. He was doing what he loved to do; but sadly, in spite of all efforts to save him, Jacob did not survive his injuries. With heavy hearts and many tears, we said goodbye to him this afternoon.

"In a final gesture of giving, Jacob donated his organs so that others might live. We are so grateful that at least something good can come of our loss. How precious life can leave so quickly is beyond our comprehension, so we rely on and thank everyone for their prayers and support. We find comfort in knowing Jacob is with his Savior in Heaven."

A report from the Minnesota State Patrol was received by The Journal Sunday afternoon, indicating that Weber had died late Sunday morning. The Journal and other news outlets reported that information in Monday editions. The State Patrol issued a later report indicating Weber was still in critical condition.

"The Journal relied on the accuracy of the information from the State Patrol," said Journal Editor Kevin Sweeney. "It was a very unfortunate situation, and we are sorry that the report caused extra anguish to the Weber family at this sorrowful time."

Weber and several other youths were traveling northbound on Highway 15 at about 2:29 p.m. on Saturday, according to the State Patrol. Weber crossed in front of the semi, which was driven by Andrew Damhoe, 23, of Blomkest. Winthrop Fire and Ambulance, along with Life Link, assisted at the scene, and Weber was rushed to the Hennepin County Medical Center.
