Search continues for dog park site

September 11, 2012
By Josh Moniz - Staff Writer , The Journal

NEW ULM The New Ulm Park and Recreation Commission continued discussion on a potential site for a dog park in New Ulm on Monday.

The Commission has already committed to establishing the dog park. Any expenses associated with the park, such as the construction of the boundary fence, will be covered by money raised by the dog park enthusiasts.

So far, the Commission has considered sites on city-owned land at the intersection of 22nd North Street and Industrial Street, and at South German Park near 6th South Street. Dog park supporters have advocated for Steinhauser Park, which is located in the open area next to the New Ulm Recreation Center on South Garden Street. The supporters pointed out that centralized location of Steinhauser Park makes it more accessible to people and provides services like lighting, parking and restrooms at the Rec Center.

The Commission decided to tour all the prospective sites. The tentative plan is to complete the tour before the its October meeting.

In other business, the Commission made official a statement to the New Ulm City Council, declaring its intent to finalize the Harman Park building renovation, which has been discussed for months. Delaying or limiting the project was recently brought up as a cost-saving option during the Council's recent budget meeting. The Commission's intent will be presented to the Council for consideration during its next budget session.
