HONU to start 'Swap It to Drop It' campaign

Kickoff events planned for Sept. 15

NEW ULM - People in New Ulm hoping to lose 10 pounds, maintain their weight or simply make healthier food choices will soon be hearing about a host of great new ideas to help them at various places around town. Hearts Beat Back: The Heart of New Ulm Project (HONU) is launching its latest campaign, called SWAP IT to DROP IT, this week.

The eight-month community-wide campaign is designed to inspire people to make small changes (SWAPs) every day that can help them lose or maintain weight and improve their health. Each month, the campaign will highlight a different theme and new SWAP IT tips. The theme for September is healthy beverages.

The idea is that making SWAPs to save just 100 calories each day can help you lose 10 pounds in a year, explained HONU dietitian and project manager Rebecca Lindberg, MPH, RD. For example, choose water instead a soda, skip the sugar and creamer in your coffee or downsize your daily soda from 20 ounces to 12 ounces. It s that easy, and every SWAP makes a difference.

A different SWAP IT to DROP IT billboard will be seen in New Ulm every month

The campaign runs through April 2013 and will showcase a different billboard message on Broadway each month along with a full-page ad in the New Ulm Shopper featuring a success story from a different New Ulm resident each month. Over the duration of the campaign, New Ulm residents Lori Burkhart, John Gag, Susan Hogen, Lynnette Holm, Tanya Horner, Cindy Midas, Jeanne Moeri, Pat Novak, Kim Schlumpberger and Carmen Williams will all be sharing their stories and tips about how small food and beverage SWAPs have helped them lose weight or improve their overall health.

Signs and information about how to make healthy SWAPs will be featured in restaurants, grocery stores and convenience stores. In addition, HONU will be conducting regular cooking demonstrations and tours at New Ulm grocery stores and continuing its popular Dine with a Dietitian events at local restaurants.

New Ulm businesses participating in the campaign include: Convenience stores: Casey s, Clark, Freedom, Holiday, Kwik Trip; Grocery stores: Cash Wise Foods, Hy-Vee; Restaurants: Burger King, DJ s Restaurant, George s Fine Steaks & Spirits, Joni s Restaurant, The Lamplighter Family Sports Bar & Grill, Lola s Larkspur Market, McDonald s, Otto s Feierhaus & Bierstube, Perkins Restaurant & Bakery, Subway, Turner Hall, Ulmer Caf? and Veigel s Kaiserhoff.

Kickoff Events

The SWAP IT to DROP IT campaign will kick off on Saturday, Sept. 15 with a free cooking demonstration at Hy-Vee, 2015 S. Broadway, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., followed by another free cooking demonstration at Cash Wise Foods, 1220 Westridge Rd., from 10 to 11 a.m.

At both stores, Rebecca Fliszar, RD, HONU dietitian and host of the NuCAT show, "What s Cooking New Ulm?" will help people learn how to SWAP IT to DROP IT and share how to make lower-calorie, tasty and satisfying beverages. Those who visit the stores that day can enter a drawing to win a $50 grocery store gift certificate and other prizes.

HONU is also offering a free six-week community health challenge starting in October. People will be inspired to make healthier food and beverage SWAPs - and also SWAPs to help them incorporate more physical activity and life balance into their day.
