REDWOOD FALLS - Minnesota Valley Lutheran stopped Redwood Valley's two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter and escaped with a victory Friday night in non-conference football.
Matt Tessmer had two touchdown runs of 27 and 36 yards and Ryan Grunke had a one-yard touchdown run.
MVL (1-1) will begin conference play at St. Clair on Friday while Redwood Valley will host Luverne.
St. Mary's 36, RRC 6
LAMBERTON - Sleepy Eye St. Mary's defeated Red Rock Central Friday night in a Southern Minnesota Conference football match-up.
Jordan Anderson led the offensive attack for the Knights with 129 passing yards, 147 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Mitch Neid had 20 carries for 139 yards and three touchdowns. Sean Mathiowetz had three catches for 74 yards.
Mitch Schroepfer had 14 carries for 39 yards and Jeff DeCock had two catches for 73 yards and a touchdown for RRC.
St. Mary's (1-0) will play cross-town rival Sleepy Eye on Friday while Red Rock Central will host Springfield.
Madelia 28, RCW 8
MADELIA - Madelia defeated Renville County West in Southern Confederacy Conference football on Friday.
Jake Denn had 18 carries for 58 yards for Madelia and Haden Johnson had 96 passing yards on five completions for RCW.
Madelia (1-0) will play at Nicollet on Friday and RCW will play at Mountain Lake Area in Danube.
Sibley East 34, GFW 8
ARLINGTON - Sibley East started its 2012 campaign with a victory against Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop on Friday night.
The Wolverines did most of their damage on the ground, rushing for 153 yards compared to 59 rushing yards for the Thunderbirds.
However, GFW was much more effective in the air, with quarterback Frank Fairchild passing for 103 yards and Sibley East earning just 16 passing yards. Fairchild also rushed for 16 yards.
The Thunderbirds scored a touchdown on a four-yard pass from Fairchild to Mitch Kiecker, after which Tony Weber converted a two-point play.
GFW (0-1) will host New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva at 7 p.m. on Friday. Sibley East (1-0) will play at Mayer Lutheran at 7 p.m. Friday.
CM/C 18, BLHS 14
MORGAN - Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart was down 18-0 heading into the fourth quarter and rallied for two touchdowns, but the comeback came up short as Cedar Mountain/Comfrey held on for the victory in Friday's Southern Minnesota Conference football game.
Riley Kerkhoff was 9-of-16 passing for 143 yards two touchdowns and also had a 10-yard rushing touchdown for CM/C. Brady Kerkhoff ran for 81 yards on 15 carries and had 61 yards on two receptions, which were both touchdown passes. Zach Kerkhoff had 51 yards on eight carries.
Mason Clark (23 passing yards, 70 rushing yards, 15 tackles) and Tate Lange (69 rushing yards) scored rushing touchdowns for the Mustangs.
CM/C (1-0) will host Wabasso Friday and BLHS will take on New Ulm Cathedral in Hector on Friday.
