MAPLETON - The River Valley girls' tennis team earned a 6-1 win over Maple River on Tuesday.
Despite the final score, it turned out to be a close match-up, with two matches going to three sets.
One of those three-setters saw the Wildcats' Kallie Smith outlast the Eagles' Sam Bammert 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) in a three-hour marathon at No. 1 singles. Marlayna Evers and Erika Ries also picked up a three-set win for the Wildcats at No. 2 doubles, rallying to defeat Samantha Beto and Alissa Groskreutz 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 6-4.
River Valley won the rest of the singles matches, with Becky Roiger winning 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) against Megan Langworthy at No. 2, Lauren Laffen pulling out a 6-4, 7-5 victory against Erin Hislop at No. 3 and Natalie Stevens taking her match at No. 4 by a 6-3, 6-1 score against Brittany Groskreutz.
The Wildcats' other win came at No. 1 doubles, where Emily Johnson and Kalyn Haas defeated Hannah Proehl and Rachel Rigdon 7-5, 6-4. The Eagles' lone victory was achieved by Alex Chaney and Alyssa Rubey, who defeated Stephanie Beto and Cassie Barkosky 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at No. 3 doubles.
In JV action, the Wildcats won 4-0 with victories by Ashley Johnson and Erika Ries (7-1), Caitlin Lang and Sara Haugo (5-4 (7-3)) and Carissa Evers and Tayler Hoffman (5-4 (8-6) and 5-3).
River Valley is now 3-0 on the young season and 1-0 in Gopher Valley Conference play. The Wildcats will host St. James in Sleepy Eye at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. The Saints come in undefeated as well and are ranked No. 2 in the latest state rankings.
