A monument was dedicated Monday night in German Park, commemorating all whole suffered, settlers and Dakota, during the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. From left are the Michael Lucio Family Dancers, from the Lower Sioux Community in Morton, who performed at a multi-cultural dance program in German Park. In the middle are JoAnne and Gordon Bird, artists from South Dakota, Mayor Bob Beussman and Denis Warta. The designs of horses neighing in distress on the monument were created by JoAnne Bird to symbolize the suffering that occurred. The monument also features a Dakota tepee and a settler's cabin.
