NEW ULM - One case of West Nile Virus and one pertussis (whooping cough) case have been confirmed in Brown County, according to Brown County Public Health Director Karen Moritz.
Minnesota is seeing a rise in confirmed West Nile Virus cases this year with 22, mostly in Southwest and South Central parts of the state, Moritz wrote in her public health update to be reviewed by Brown County commissioners Tuesday, Aug. 21.
Moritz added that many people actually have West Nile Virus and never really know it, but some people become quite ill with it and the illness can cause long-term neurological and motor difficulty.
The virus usually begins with fever and fatigue and can later cause confusion and loss of organ and motor function.
"The message remains - Use DEET to protect people from mosquito bites," Moritz reported.
She added that pertussis (whooping cough) continues to be widely circulating in Minnesota with more than 2,000 confirmed 2012 cases, one in Brown County.
Commissioners will consider:
A $25,000 quote from Jim's Stucco, Revere, to stucco the License Bureau building. The project will avoid recurring corner block repair and repainting costs.
The Building Committee also considered three exterior insulation and finishing system (EIFS) quotes ranging from $24,375 to $36,000. EIFS would be attached by adhesive to the exterior of concrete block walls.
The committee preferred a mechanically-attached traditional stucco project to the exterior of concrete block walls.
Six drainage ditch repair requests ranging from $561.70 to $2,010.50 for tile washouts, side drain, ditch bank and tile outlet repairs in Mulligan, Prairieville, Cottonwood, Linden, and Eden Townships. The repairs were considered normal maintenance repairs.
Budget review sessions will be held in courthouse room 204 at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 21, Thursday, Aug. 23 and 9 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24.
The county board meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the courthouse commissioner's room.
