Cleanup contractor handles diesel spill

LAFAYETTE - An environmental cleanup contractor and the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) handled a diesel fuel spill reported to the Nicollet County Sheriff's Office at 9:59 a.m., Monday, Aug. 13 at United Farmer's Cooperative (UFC).

"Somebody apparently tried to take 80 gallons of fuel from a diesel fuel tank on a piece of equipment and spilled fuel on a gravel lot last weekend," said Craig Schafer, of the MPCA Emergency Response Team.

Schafer said UFC handled the situation properly by calling the MPCA and Apex, an environmental cleanup contractor.

"Apex came out and dug out all the contaminated gravel in the lot and thin spread it out to aerate it in the sun," Schafer added. "I talked to the Apex manager who handled the situation according to MPCA instructions. It was a good example of properly handling the situation."
