NEW ULM - An engineer at the Fargo, N.D. Case-IH four-wheel-drive plant made his presence felt Saturday at the Brown County Free Fair Demolition Derby.

Nate Westerberg won the Old Iron and 80s and Newer Modified class and the Pickup division with a 1974 Cadillac Fleetwood and a 1963 Ford F250. Both vehicles had 350 Chevrolet engines.

The pickup event of 18 trucks that lasted about 45 minutes was one of the largest demo derby heats ever. Westerberg said he competes in 15 to 20 demo derbies across the Upper Midwest each summer.

New Ulm firefighters tend to Anthony Mathiowetz after his car flips on its top Saturday night at the Brown County Free Fair Demolition Derby. He was not hurt in the mishap.

"I knew some of the guys that run this derby so I thought I'd try it," said Westerberg who lives in Fergus Falls. "This is a good derby. The track is huge and very fast. I liked it. I'll be back."

Westerberg said he didn't suffer any serious injuries.

"Just a little sore," he said at the end of the night. "You wreck stuff and sometimes you get wrecked. It's part of the game."

Westerberg said he enjoys working on the cars and trucks in preparation for the derby.

"It's a rush at the derby," he added. "Thanks to lots of long, sometimes sleepless nights, welding in the shop. But it's worth it."
