NEW ULM - Katie Schwartz competed in goat, poultry and photography competition at the Brown County Free Fair but finds goat raising the most fulfilling.

Schwartz won the grand and reserve championship for dairy goats at the fair but its the usefulness of goat's milk and dealing with the animals themselves that really makes her feel good.

"We make cheese and soap with goat's milk. They're great pets, especially the Saanens," said Schwartz, 15, who has been raising goats since she was five years old.

Saanens, named for the Saanen valley in Switzerland, produce the most milk on average of any goat breed and they're usually calm and mild-mannered. Their milk has lower butterfat, three percent or less. A nanny produces about a gallon a day.

Schwartz placed high in poultry competition and won three ribbons for their photography exhibits.

Eleven-year-old Mollie Carnell of Comfrey is too young to compete at the Minnesota State Fair, but she won the 4-H Market Goat Grand and Reserve Champion titles. She also won the Open Goat show meat division.

Carnell also competed in swine, rabbit and sheep shows at the fair. She said she prefers rabbits to goats and sheep.

Marah Larson of Springfield won the Dairy Goat Open Class Show.

Ezra Krzmarzick of rural Sleepy Eye placed second among 12 poultry show contestants that made the state fair lineup. Last year, one of his chickens placed third at the state fair.

Krzmazick said he keeps busy on the family livestock farm, tending his chickens. The farm includes goats, chickens, ducks, horses, cats, and dogs.

"It teaches me responsibility and how to care for animals," Krzmarzick said.

The 4-H Swine Market Barrow State Fair lineup included Austin Augustine, Karly Krieg, Brock Miller, Carnell, Brandon Roiger, John Helget, Josie Schieffert, Tyson Meidl, Jake Christensen and Colten Gemmill.

The 4-H Market Goat state fair lineup included Krieg, Miller, Helget, Adam Sellner, Gemmill and Christensen.
