Tigers, Grizzlies take 1-0 leads in Tomahawk East playoffs

Springfield 9, St. James 5

SPRINGFIELD - Springfield opened its best-of-three Tomahawk East League playoff series against St. James with a victory on Friday.

The Tigers took a 4-1 lead after the first inning, but the A's cut the score to 4-3 with two runs in the top of the fifth. However, Springfield responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and added individual runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

Alex Frank earned a complete-game victory for the Tigers, allowing six hits and five runs (three earned). He walked three and fanned 11.

Chris Menssen took the loss for St. James, surrendering eight runs (four earned) and nine hits and striking out five in 6 1/3 innings of work.

Matt Vogel (3-for-5, two runs) and Alex Fink (3-for-3, two doubles, run, two RBI) led the way for Springfield on offense. St. James was led by Joe Krause and Austin Pinke with two hits apiece.

The Tigers and A's will meet for Game 2 of the series at 7:30 p.m. tonight in St. James.

Searles 5, Essig 4

SEARLES - Mike Anderson drove home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning to lead Searles to victory against Essig Friday night, leaving the Grizzlies with 1-0 lead in the Tomahawk East League playoff series between the two teams.

Aaron Wendinger earned the win for Searles in relief of Kyle Fischer (eight innings pitched, three runs, eight hits, three walks, six strikeouts).

Dusty Fleck (13 hits, two walks, nine strikeouts) took the loss in a complete-game effort.

Dave Hatle (2-for-4, double, two RBI, run) and Anderson (2-for-5, RBI, run) led the Grizzlies at the plate. Kyle Helget (2-for-5, two RBI) and Terry Helget (2-for-3, double, RBI) paced the Bluejays on offense.

Game 2 of the series will be played at 2 p.m. today in Essig.
