STARK - The Stark Longhorns' pitching staff held the Springfield Tigers to just two hits in Stark's 4-3 victory Sunday night in the final regular season Tomahawk East League amateur baseball game for both teams.
Longhorns starting pitcher Caleb Hillesheim drove home his team's first run of the game with a ground-rule double in the bottom of the first inning.
Marty Brandl and Matt Tews recorded the Tiger's only two hits in the top of the third, with the team able to score two runs in the inning to take a 2-1 lead.
Stark struck back with two runs in the bottom of the third on a Dusty Mangen solo home run and a Bob Schmid RBI double. The Longhorns added a run in the bottom of the fourth and Springfield scored a run on a botched double play in the seventh to round out the game's scoring.
Hillesheim (6 1/3 innings, one earned run, two hits, eight strikeouts, six walks) earned the win, with Tews (four innings pitched, seven hits, three earned runs, three walks, one strikeout) taking the loss.
Jake Mangen paced Stark with three hits, with Schmid adding two hits and two RBI.
The Tigers (10-16 overall, 10-12 in league play) will enter the postseason with the No. 3 seed in the National Division and will open with a best-of-three series against No. 4 St. James. Springfield will host St. James for Game 1 at 8 p.m. on Friday before traveling to St. James to play Game 2 at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Stark, the No. 5 seed in the National Division, will play open its postseason campaign at No. 2 Sleepy Eye at 8 p.m. on Friday.
