ST. PETER - The New Ulm Sun 17-and-under girls soccer team defeated Fairmont, Sunday to take the championship of the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA) Southwest District league playoff at the Gustavus Adolphus soccer complex in St. Peter.
The win came in a shootout after Fairmont and New Ulm tied 2 - 2 in regulation play and two five-minute overtimes.
Monica Illikman scored both goals for New Ulm during the game - one unassisted and one with an assist by Peyton Lewis.
All five of New Ulm's shooters scored goals on their shots: Abby Koelpin, Jenna Braam, Monica Illikman, Peyton Lewis, and Lydia Schoof. New Ulm goalkeeper Kyrie Sellnow successfully blocked one of Fairmont's shootout attempts to secure the win for New Ulm.
The team advances to regional play on Wednesday, July 18.
