NEW ULM - The New Ulm Brewers scored two runs in the first inning and added two more runs later in the game as they defeated Springfield 4-2 on Sunday evening at Johnson Park in amateur baseball action.
Brett Gieseke allowed five hits in a complete game victory for the Brewers. Matt Vogel took the loss for Springfield.
Brock Sieve got the Brewers going with a single to right field to drive in Wade French. Brady Ranweiler scored after a pair of wild pitches to give New Ulm a 2-0 lead.
Springfield responded with a run in the top half of the second inning when Zach Bisel's single to left scored Adam Schmidt.
The Brewers took advantage of two more passed balls in the second inning that allowed Nick Seidl to get into scoring position. Leadoff hitter Aaron Pfaff recorded the first of two RBIs with a sacrifice fly to left field to score Seidl. A one-out single in the fourth inning scored Seidl to give the Brewers a 4-1 lead.
Christian Loomis hit a RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the deficit to two runs. Gieseke shut the door on Springfield in the final three innings, and the Brewers held on for the victory.
New Ulm will host Searles on Tuesday. Springfield will travel to Lamberton to take on the Long Sox on Wednesday.
