Kindness from 46 years ago remembered

July 3, 2012
The Journal

To the editor:

I would like to take the opportunity to publicly recognize a silent hero in the community that should be recognized for his extreme act of kindness and compassion for a fallen friend and coworker.

My father, Paul Renner, (a New Ulm police officer), was accidentally shot and killed 46 years ago on June 23, 1966. I recently learned that his best friend and fellow officer Roger Burdorf worked overtime for weeks following my father's death and had arranged through the department Chief to give the money to my mother through payroll. My mom had never known that Roger was actually responsible for the money she received as Roger had requested this be kept in confidence within the department. Nowadays this type of act of kindess and compassion would not be allowed under current payroll rules.

I cannot begin to thank Roger enough for what he did in my father's memory to assist a fallen officer's family in their time of need. There are truly heroes among us, and I wish to publicly thank Roger, and his family for time spent away from them and for his sacrifice of hours of time while he was mourning the loss of his friend and coworker. God Bless you and your family - your kindness and act of assistance to my mom and myself will never be forgotten.
