18U New Ulm Blueberries; 16U Hotshots win championships

MANKATO - The 18U New Ulm Blueberries defeated the BoDiddlies of St. Cloud 4-3 Sunday to take the championship of the Mankato tournament.

Winning pitcher was Carlie Maasz, who went five innings in relief, gave up three hits and struck out five. Hallie Kuelbs pitched the first two innings and gave up three runs.

The Blueberries were down 3-0 after the fourth inning. Kristi Larson led off the fifth inning with a hit. After an out, Charlotte Pfingston hit a double. Mikayla Weilauge hit two-run double. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Ellie Schneider got on base with a walk with one out; she moved to second base on fielder's choice and then stole third base. Katie Forst had game-wining hit with two outs in bottom of seventh.

In Sunday's first game, New Ulm advanced to the championship by defeating Jackson, 13-2.

The Blueberries' record is 16-3, and they meet New Ulm Red on July 10 in New Ulm.

Sioux Falls Flash 5

MANKATO - The New Ulm U16 Hotshots defeated Sioux Falls Flash 12-5 in the championship game Sunday at the Mankato tournament.

Hannah Backer got the pitching win, throwing seven strikeouts, giving up four walks and allowing six hits.

Offensively, Abby Kamm went four-for-four and scored two runs; Rachel Stranmark went two-for-three and scored three runs; Backer went two-for three; Kristen Mohr went two-for three; and Morgan Soderholm went two-for four.

In other Sunday action, the Hotshots beat the Minnesota Blast from Duluth 4-2 and Waite Park 3-2 in eight innings to advance to the championship game.
