NEW ULM-The New Ulm Red 16 and under team won two of its three games in the Windmill Classic Sunday at Harman Park to take third place and finish the weekend with a 5-1 record.
New Ulm won its first game over Lakeville 11-0. Abby Kamm was the winning pitcher.
In the second game, against the St. Peter Chaos, New Ulm wiggled out of a jam - that had runners on the corners with no outs - without giving up a run in the first inning.
"We did a very nice job there," New Ulm Red head coach Rick Kamm said. "We turned a double play using a fake, it shows our girls practice hard and know what to do come game situation."
Brianna Sieve delivered with a two-out RBI single to score Kamm in the bottom half to give New Ulm an early lead.
St. Peter tied it in the second and added four more in the third, thanks in large part to a two-run double by Megan Overgaard to take a 5-1 lead.
Down 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth, Hannah Nelson, Sieve, and Hannah Backer all reached base to start the inning, but only Nelson came around to score and St. Peter held on for a 6-2 win.
"We hit the ball well all game," Kamm said. "They were just playing us perfectly and there just is not much you can do about that."
Backer pitched for New Ulm. She struck out six batters and walked three in six innings. She allowed the six runs on just five hits.
Carolyn Conlan picked up the win for St. Peter, she allowed the two runs on seven hits.
St. Peter defeated New Ulm Blue 9-6 earlier in the day.
New Ulm Red went on to defeat Rochester 9-6 in the third place game. Hannah Backer was the winning pitcher and also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Kamm went 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
St. Peter went on to lose to the Warriors -whom New Ulm Red defeated Saturday - by a score of 9-1 in the championship game.
"We are very proud of our girls," Kamm said of the third-place finish. "It was a good weekend."
