New Ulm Gold goes 1-1 on first day of Grand Rapids tourney

GRAND RAPIDS - Dan Blackstad starred for the New Ulm Gold Legion baseball team on Friday as the team ended up with one win and one loss on the opening day of the Grand Rapids Tournament.

Blackstad earned the win on the mound in Gold's 9-6 win over Richfield, allowing three runs, four hits, walking three and striking out two. He aided his cause by going 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI.

Blackstad was 2-for-2 with a double in New Ulm's 9-2 loss against North St. Paul in the team's second game. Jory Dove took the loss in the contest, allowing seven runs and seven hits and striking out nobody.

Also providing strong offensive contributions for New Ulm against Richfield were Zach Hoffmann (3-for-4, two doubles, three runs scored), Eric Prokosch (two-run home run) and Kevin Larson (two-run home run). Gold produced only five hits against North St. Paul, with Jason Shaul driving in both of the team's runs.

New Ulm Gold will continue tournament play today, facing Marshall at 2:30 p.m. and then taking on Grand Rapids at 7:30 p.m.
