District 88 opened bids last week for the purchase of the former Middle School building. This week its facilities committee is wading through the details of the bids and will prepare a recommendation for the school board.
There were four bids on the property, and two of them would involve the New Ulm Actors Community Theater in preserving the auditorium and turning part of the building into a theater and performing arts center. The rest of the building would be converted to market rate apartments.
Which bid is the best for the district depends upon more than the up-front purchase price. The kind of use that would be made of the building is important, as is negotiating access to the facilities for the district.
There are a lot of things to consider, and we wish the district well as it considers its options.
