Council will consider restoring Smokes 4 Less tobacco license

June 19, 2012
The Journal

NEW ULM The New Ulm City Council will consider restoring the cigarette license for New Ulm Smokes 4 Less with conditions today.

During the Council's June 5 meeting, it denied Smokes 4 Less a renewal of its cigarette license, which expires June 30. The reason cited for the denial was the selling of herbal incense laced with chemicals, which councilors claimed to be intended for drug use.

The agenda states concern whether the denial could be sustained if challenged. However, it also states that the store's legal representative informed the City of New Ulm that it plans to stop selling herbal incense.

The Council will consider issuing a new annual tobacco license for the store.

In another matter, the Council will consider options for repair to the downtown sidewalk inlaid bricks and concrete paver crosswalks.

Options for the sidewalks include replacing just brick section of the sidewalk with full-depth, colored, stamped concrete; replacing the sidewalk from the joint to the back of the curb with a brick section of colored, stamped concrete; or replacing the sidewalk from the joint to the back of the curb with standard concrete.

Options of the crosswalks replacing them with asphalt with 12-inch painted lines or replacing them with 7-inch thick, colored-stamped concrete that look similar to the pavers.

The Council meets at 5 p.m. in New Ulm City Hall.
