NEW ULM - The City of New Ulm will not shut off utilities to the Marktplatz Mall Tuesday because the outstanding utility bills have been paid, according to the City's legal representation.
The City said Friday that it intended to shut off the power and water to the mall due to failure to pay the remainder of long-standing debt on the northern portion of the mall. If that had occurred, businesses in the mall would not be allowed to open due to City and state regulations.
Randy Danielson, who owns the southern portion of the mall, said that he personally paid the $4,100 in utilities owed by New Ulm Retail and Development, LLC. (NURD), which owns the northern portion to the mall. He said he paid so that stores in the mall wouldn't face being shut off.
NURD has previously released statements saying it would let the City shut off the utilities due to its dispute with the City. It claims the City changed accountings for the money owed, and that the City hasn't provided substantial documentation to back its position.
