Working for the brain injured

June 15, 2012
The Journal

To the editor:

I Say: I am who I am!!

Sharon Philomena (Hacker) Gieseke is my name. I am the CEO/Director of Minnesota Brain Injury Force Inc. (MNBIF) providing knowledge and support for brain injured survivors and their families. And this includes your area brain injured veterans.

Rumors are that I work for the Brain Injury Association of MN (BIA of MN) This is wrong, I do not pretend to work for the (BIA of MN). The BIA of MN provides their own information/brochures to MNBIF and we distribute them to your area brain injured.

I have organized and facilitated a monthly brain injury support group meeting in New Ulm for 10 years. Present site: St. Paul's Lutheran Church Fireside Room. For more than two years I also have organized and facilitated a monthly brain injury support group meeting in Mankato. Present site: Snell Motors Community Room. A support group in Hutchinson is on hold until funds are made available MNBIF from the Huthinson area community.

I have organized Brain Injury Forums where area legislators meet to listen to the needs of your area brain injured. I have organized Brain Injury/Brain Health events to help your area brain injured find knowledge and resources they need to live a better life.

The MNBIF meetings, events, etc, have always been free to the public to attend. You might have seen the advertised events in area newspapers. Some newspapers have charged us for these ads but we are unable to afford them now. Some communities will not know about any MNBIF events unless someone from each community gets involved and contacts their newspaper's editor to say "brain injury matters." MNBIF is thankful and grateful to The Journal (New Ulm), a very generous newspaper, for the support to your area brain injured by publishing many brain injury ads free of charge for ten years.

I try my best to help your area brain injured but I do get the run-around. I go from one organization to the next. One organization will tell me about still another organization that might help your area brain injured but they themselves prefer not to help. They like to give me encouragement and reinforce the importance of me helping your area brain injured. I have found that some people create their own jobs with government funds and then decide to do little or nothing. Well, for more than ten years I have be paid nothing and I still continue to help your brain injured.

I thought the area communities needed to know that in 2011, the County of Blue Earth gave the most donations to MNBIF. This county should be applauded for their generosity in supporting your area brain injured survivors which includes your area brain injured veterans.

MNBIF receives numerous phone calls and e-mails from your area brain injured survivors or their loved ones and these people feel lost and forsaken by their community and the government. Your area brain injured survivors need help in finding the strength to cultivate hope and faith in living a new life. These special people battle with their brain injury everyday just like a US Marine in war time. Please consider helping Minnesota Brain Injury Force Inc. help your area brain injured.
