SLEEPY EYE - Sleepy Eye firefighters battled a barn fire with five trucks for a couple hours Sunday night on the Mike Hoffmann farm on 230th Avenue, several miles southeast of town.
Mutual aid was provided by Hanska and New Ulm firefighters.
Sleepy Eye Fire Chief Tom Moldaschel said lots of hay burned in a barn made of wood, cement, and tin. Much of the building was destroyed. Livestock got out of the building before it was engulfed in flames.
"We think the cause of the fire may have been lightning. It really pounded down," Moldaschel said.
He said spectator traffic around the fire hindered firefighting efforts.
