NEW ULM - The New Ulm Police identified the man struck by a train Sunday afternoon as Darrick Postel, 41, of New Ulm.

The accident occurred at 5:17 p.m. near the 20th North Street crossing.

The police report states that a train owned by Canadian Pacific was traveling southbound on the railroad tracks. The train's engineer and conductor observed a man sitting on the tracks approximately 450 feet north of the 20th Street crossing. The engineer engaged the train's emergency brakes and blared the horn. Before the train could come to a complete stop, the man was struck by the train's engine and thrown down the northwestern side of the tracks into a grassy area. Postel was found bleeding and unconscious by emergency personnel. He was taken to the New Ulm Medical Center and then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center. He was listed in serious condition there on Monday afternoon.

The New Ulm Police Department is investigating the incident.
