Give pedestrians a brake

May 3, 2012
The Journal

To the editor:

Do you enjoy walking? Many citizens of New Ulm do. But I wonder if they are like me in that they do not enjoy almost getting run over while crossing the street.

It appears to me that many drivers are unaware of Minnesota Statutes 1999, Chapter 169.21 - Pedestrian Law, which states that all vehicles must come to a complete stop for all pedestrians in a marked or unmarked crosswalk, while all pedestrians must use common sense and not enter the crosswalk with a vehicle approaching if the distance is such that the driver cannot safely yield to the pedestrian (paraphrased from the Minnesota Safety Council website www.minnesotasafetycouncil.org/facts/factsheet.cfm?FS=72). I have seen drivers fail to even slow down for people in the crosswalk, including school children on their way home.

Drivers please let this be your wake up call to slow down and stop before someone is hurt.
