To the editor:
I am responding to an editorial submitted by Johann Baumeister on March 23 and others who might think like him. I'm not sure what point he was trying to make about being a product of New Ulm and attended WELS schools and church. Since I fit that profile, I feel obligated to respond.
What I am about to share is "Speaking the truth in love" (Ephesians 4:15) concerning marriage. The statement about WELS teaching that "Homosexuality is a choice" is confusing. Our WELS doctrine teaches that homosexuality is wrong; it is a sin. That is based on God's Word. I choose to follow the Bible's teaching instead of human reason. If you are interested in the truth about the sin of homosexuality see Genesis 19:1-29, Leviticus 18:22 & 20:13, Romans 1:26-27,1 Corinthians 6:9-10, and Jude 7. On the Biblical teaching that marriage is to be between one man and one woman see Genesis 2:18-24 for the first marriage, and quotations of it by Jesus in Matthew 19:5 and Mark 10:6-8.
If Baumeister meant that the WELS teaches that an individual chooses to follow the homosexual/lesbian life style instead of a God-ordained one man/one woman marriage, that is correct. It's a real tragedy that this choice of life style is becoming a part of American life, as though this weren't something that is a moral disgrace, but a psychological quirk. Of course this is true, it is a psychological quirk; but it is also a moral disgrace. Homosexuality is a mental disease, but it is also a sin.
For those individuals who refuse to accept God's Word on the matter of marriage between one man and one woman, and the sin of homosexuality, there are other sources that present the same ideas through research. Go to www.frc.org and ask for the publication: "The Top Ten Myths About Homosexuality." My choice is to follow God's directive about marriage between one man and one woman. Please vote YES on this November's marriage amendment question. A blank is a No vote.
