BROWN COUNTY - A list of top 2012 taxpayers were recently presented to Brown County commissioners.

Brown County Auditor-Treasurer Marlin Helget's property tax update stated that commercial properties pay 1.5 percent of the first $150,000 of value and 2 percent of all greater value.

Helget added there is minimal shift in the names the appear in annual top taxpayers reports.

He said agricultural (land) parcels are becoming a bit more common in the Estimated Market Value (EMV) column due to escalating land values.

The top 25 taxpayers pay about 11 percent of the annual net tax levy, according to the update.

The report listed 53 parcels published in the Expiration of Redemption listing. Most of the total of $1,128,405.82 in delinquent taxes are special assessments due the City of New Ulm. Those taxes are due May 31, 2012.

Failure to redeem lands prior to the expiration of redemption will result in the loss of land and forfeiture to the State of Minnesota.

First-quarter direct (tax) payment installments were applied May 23. A total of 582 parcels use the quarterly offering, which accounts for 4 percent of annual tax collections.

The first debit for the semi-annual tax payment plan occurs Tuesday, May 1. About 500 parcels are enrolled in semi-annual plans that generate $666,000 in collections, 2 percent of annual collections.

"It is our hope to get these enrollments to 10 percent of our total taxpayers. There are many benefits to the taxpayer and county by utilizing these payment options," Helget wrote in the update.
