Musicians wanted: Minnesota ‘Over-60’ Band seeking new members

March 27, 2012
The Journal

To the editor:

Grab that band instrument, dust it off and join the Minnesota 'Over-60' Band.

Playing music is a lifelong activity, and a group of Minnesotans who perform around the state are a testament to that reality. The Minnesota 'Over-60' band is made up primarily of members who are 60 and older (men and women) who perform in numerous parades, at county fairs and in a variety of other venues during the summer. The band even has a few members younger than 60, so if that is you, and you have an interest, give us a try.

While the group started in Sibley County back in 1953 as the Sibley County Senior Citizens Hobby Band, the group continued to expand, so nearly six decades later the group includes people from a wide variety of communities and walks of life, and who have a mutual interest in music as a hobby. The Minnesota 'Over-60' band was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame in 2003.

The Minnesota 'Over-60' Band is having rehearsals May 4, 11, 18 in the Arlington Community Center. Each rehearsal includes two practices from 10-11:30 a.m. And 1-2:30 p.m. Performances begin in June and continue into September.
