Find one message and stick to it

One of the critical foreign policy failures during President Barack Obama's administration involves Iran. Despite having ample evidence the regime there is building a nuclear bomb, Obama, along with the rest of the international community, has done little to thwart Tehran.

During a speech to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee last weekend, the president tried another tack. He only muddied the waters even more.

At one point, Obama emphasized nuclear weapons in Iran's hands are a clear threat to U.S. interests. "I will not hesitate to use force to defend the United States and its interests," he stressed.

Then, the president said "there is too much loose talk of war."

Huh? That may well be how Iranian leaders reacted. At one point Obama threatens to use military force, then he is critical of "loose talk of war." What does that mean?

Analysts said one purpose of Obama's speech was to discourage Israel from unilaterally launching an attack against Iranian nuclear facilities. His comment that, "Israel must be able to defend itself, by itself, against any threat" is a strange way to accomplish that.

After three years in office, it is clear Obama has no idea of how to handle international diplomacy. Now he wants four more years, perhaps to learn the craft. Americans simply cannot afford the potential cost, perhaps in lost lives, of such a school.
