MINNEAPOLIS - After playing a tough game Wednesday night, the New Ulm boys hockey team had a bit of a relapse Thursday afternoon.

Rochester Lourdes scored four first-period goals to set the tone, defeating New Ulm 10-1 at Mariucci Arena in the Class A Boys Hockey State Tournament consolation bracket. The loss ends New Ulm's season at 17-13.

"I truly believe we left everything we had on the ice [Wednesday night in a 5-1 loss to Thief River Falls]," New Ulm coach Erik Setterholm said. "We didn't get back to the hotel until almost midnight and the kids weren't sleeping until 1 o'clock in the morning. It's not an easy thing to do, I really believe we left everything we had out on the ice. You need a day to recover from something like that."

Lourdes (21-9) will now play Little Falls - a 5-4 winner over Duluth Marshall in the other consolation semifinal - in the consolation championship game, which will be played at 10 a.m. Saturday at Mariucci Arena.

Lourdes outshot New Ulm 42-12, including 16-1 in the second period.

Dylan Schreckenberg scored New Ulm's lone goal on a power play in the third period. It was his first goal of the tournament.

Lourdes got on the board just 23 seconds into the contest when Jason Samuelson knocked in a rebound. At the 2:16 mark, Connor Nellans made it 2-0 and Ben Weir and Justin Dewitz later added goals in the first six minutes to put Lourdes ahead comfortably 4-0.

Lourdes added a short-handed goal in the second period when Alex Funk scored to make it 5-0. Lourdes got another goal with 9:30 left in the period after Griffin Slightam scored to give Lourdes a 6-0 lead. Funk added his second goal of the game at the 11:49 mark and Samuelson scored his second goal of the game later for the 8-0 lead.

New Ulm finally got on the board in the third period when Schreckenberg scored a power play goal on an assist from Brody Peterson and Brandon Helget.

Dewitz later added a goal for Lourdes for the 9-1 lead and Griffen Buck made it 10-1 when he scored at the 13-minute mark.

Brach Kraus had 18 saves and Wilie Osborne finished with 14 saves in net for the Eagles.

Despite the final margin in its final game, Setterholm was proud of the way his team battled all season to get back to the state tournament.

"I told these guys, 'Nobody expected that,'" Setterholm said. "They accomplished a lot, more than anybody ever thought they could."
