Highway 14 solution

February 25, 2012

To the editor:

Did you know that Highway 14 was supposed to have been a four-lane highway back in the Eisenhower administration, 1953-1961? Open a Minnesota map and you will see where Interstate 90 drops down at Rochester. Well, that interstate was supposed to continue west to Brookings, S.D. That would have put a four-lane highway right in New Ulm's back yard.

Do you know that New Ulm was one of the stmbling points of this not happening because it would have "destroyed our small town?"

Back in the '60s era our trucking association endorsed an increase in our fuel tax for highway improvements, but that money went into the general fund.

Now it is being said that in 14 to 20 years, Highway 14 should be upgraded to a four-lane. Don't hold your breath.

Here would be a quick fix to get that four-lane or maybe even a six-lane highway, but some quick action needs to be taken: Build the new Vikings stadium between New Ulm and Nicollet. Let's not mess it up again, time is running out.
