NEW?ULM - More than 60 people from the New Ulm area have successfully completed the Exercise Is Medicine Program (EIM) offered at Anytime Fitness in New Ulm.
The program was designed in response to the global initiative launched by the American College of Sports and Medicine whose goal is to make physical activity and exercise a standard part of a global disease prevention and treatment medical paradigm.
The program was introduced in June 2011 in New Ulm.
"We created our EIM program to support our local physicians and physical therapists and their patients,"?says Jill Augustin, owner of Anytime Fitness, New Ulm. "It is one thing for physicians to prescribe exercise to their patients, yet another to ensure that patients are getting qualified instruction on how to begin a safe, high-quality and effective exercise program appropriate for their fitness level. Physicians know that if they want to see a decrease in incidence of disease, chronic health conditions and obesity they can't just send their patients out for a leisurely stroll around the block."
The EIM program is based on guidelines set by Exercise Is Medicine.org, and requires a four-week commitment from participants. It includes a personal fitness coach, a thorough medical questionnaire/evaluation and fitness assessment. The fitness coach provides individual instruction of professionally designed workout programs that combine cardio-respiratory and strength training, nutrition education, and stress-relief management techniques.
