Treasure Haus
THUMBS UP: The Treasure Haus marked a special milestone this week, when it presented one of those poster-sized checks to Minnesota Valley Lutheran High School, representing the millionth dollar it has raised in support of the school over the years.
Since 1985 the Treasure Haus has been operating a thrift store in New Ulm to help support MVL, especially its transportation costs. Students are bused in from as far as 60 miles away. Used clothing and other items donated to the Treasure Haus are sorted and sold, and the profits are donated to MVL (75 percent) and other ministries supported by the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Congratulations to all the volunteers and supporters of the Treasure Haus for their good work.
Happy festing
THUMBS UP: New Ulm's Fasching and the Schell's Brewery Bock Fest are taking place today. Both are intended to inject some fun and excitement into an otherwise dreary winter (although this winter has been far from dreary) before Ash Wednesday and the coming of Lent.
We wish all the festgoers in New Ulm a happy celebration, and hope they all celebrate responsibly.
Heading to State
THUMBS UP: Congratulations to the New Ulm Eagles Girls Hockey Team, which is heading to the Minnesota State High School Girls Hockey Tournament after winning the Section 3A playoffs on Thursday.
This is the 4th straight section crown for New Ulm, and the 4th straight state tournament trip. That is quite an achievement.
Good luck to the Eagles in the tournament.
Musical honors
THUMBS UP: Dick Kimmel and Jerilyn Kjellberg of New Ulm have been making music together for a long time. Their excellent efforts in the field of bluegrass music will be recognized on Feb. 24 when they are inducted into the Mid-America Music Hall of Fame. Induction ceremonies will take place in the Kato Ballroom in Mankato.
Congratulations on a well-deserved honor.
