January 23, 2012
The Journal

NEW ULM - Ted Jafvert, manager of the north half of the Marktplatz Mall, recently opened Outlet Sales of New Ulm, an outlet store near the center of the mall.

Jafvert said a similar, but larger, Outlet Sales store earlier opened in Dickinson, N.D., but that the New Ulm store is growing fast as more and more products arrive.

The list of brand-name, wholesale items include furniture, clothing, housewares, wool rugs, sporting goods, calculators and outdoor gear. There are also things like wool rugs, cellphone wallets, aluminum wallets, jewelry, compact discs, down mattress pads and Oreck vacuum cleaners.

Ted Jafvert, manager of the north half of the Marktplatz Mall, stands in mall’s newest business, Outlet Sales of New Ulm. Located near the center of the mall, it is open 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Merchandise comes from warehoused items previously destined for major department stores, at 40 to 60 percent off retail prices, Jafvert said.

He added that mall traffic has picked up since the store opened.

Store hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Born in Edina, Jafvert grew up in Fargo, N.D. where his father Lloyd sold mutual funds.

Enlisting in the Marine Corps in August 1970, Jafvert was shot in combat and received a Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals before he was discharged in August 1974.

Most of his career has been spent bringing ailing or failed businesses back to life.

Jafvert has owned motels, restaurants, a furniture store and an auto dealership in Winona and Blair, Wis.
