NEW ULM - The New Ulm Park and Recreation Commission accepted Monday an anonymous donation of $25,000 for future replacements and ADA upgrades to the ampitheater in German Park. The donation carries the conditions that the money be returned if the project does not occur and that a recognition plaque for the donor be installed at the project's completion.
Another donation of $300 came from MBW Friends and the Friends of German Park for three paverstones on German Park's memorial walkway in honor of Bobbi McCrea and her daughters Abby and Savannah, who died in a house fire in July 2011.
Other donations included $750 from the Izaak Walton League of New Ulm for the annual Arbor Day tree planting and $100 from Cheryl Demuth and the Friends of German Park for paverstones in German Park in honor of Warren and Marlene Heidemann.
In other action, the commission approved the introduction of a $4 per pair skate sharpening fee.
The fee was proposed after use of the City's service at the New Ulm Civic Center became significant on evenings and weekends. The service is also provided by the local hockey association, but skaters use the City's service when the association's service is unavailable. The charge is intended to provide income for Park and Recreation without using significant staff time.
The commission gave approval to six water resource interpretive signs to be placed along the Recreational Trail. The signs are part of the Brown County Planning and Zoning Department's project to educate area residents about water resources and urban water issues. The City of New Ulm will only be partnering with Brown County on the project. Brown County will cover the cost of the signs by applying for a U.S. EPA Urban Waters Small Grant.
