Dear Mayor Beussman and citizens of New Ulm,
The year 2011 will be ending soon and I would like to wish you and your families a merry Christmas and I also would like send to you my best wishes for 2012.
The old year will be at its end soon and the new one is already in sight. In 2012 we will celebrate the jubilee of 300 years of the "Departure along the Danube River" starting from Ulm. In the 18th century Ulm was a hub for the big wave of migration down the Danube, that started in the year 1712. People from all over the South West of Germany gathered in Ulm to start their journey to the South East of Europe on the "Ulm Schachtel," which are special boats. An open-air exhibition is the highlight of these cultural events and the International Danube festival has this topic of this historic anniversary. After a four years interval, the traditional "Bindertanz", a special dance of the coopers will be performed again in Ulm.
Last year we were very happy to have citizens from New Ulm here in Ulm. A delegation of the New Ulm Narren came to Ulm in February and met us and our Narren NGO. We were also very happy to have the Hans Joohs exchange person, Tysen Dauer in the city administration, working for the European Office and also working on some other jobs here in Ulm. It was a special pleasure to hear him, giving a concert for us and of course having him playing the organ of our Ulmer Muenster. That was really exceptional and very much appreciated by the Ulm citizens.
We were also very pleased that Jack Minch was staying in Ulm last summer. He could meet Conny Osswald who is in New Ulm just now.
I would like to thank you for all that you are doing for this exchange between our cities. This exchange program is the bridge between our citizens and it is important for all of us. We are glad that we have so many friends in your city. Mayor Gunter Czisch and Dorothea Hemminger also send their best wishes to you and all of the citizens of New Ulm.
I wish you and your family a blessed Christmas and peaceful holidays and for the next year all the best, good luck and good health.
Lord Mayor of Ulm
