Bavarian Blast a big part of their summer

July 22, 2011
The Journal

To the editor:

My husband and I have come down from the Cities for the past six years specifically to enjoy Bavarian Blast.

It's our weekend break from the kids, and a chance for us to reconnect with each other and have some fun. We never knew Heritagefest, but we absolutely cherish Bavarian Blast. I can't tell you how much we enjoyed the Alex Meixner group this year with the perennial favorites, The Concord Singers and Alpensterne. Hot and humid weather be darned - it was completely worth it! I don't consider it a successful Blast if I haven't sung and danced myself to exhaustion with the Narren and all our friends in the big tent. The Blast always happens on my birthday weekend in July, and it is a treat for me to come support the Blast, eat one of everything, tour Schell's and Morgan Creek, shop all the stores, visit the historic sites, and see if I can still climb Hermann at the end.

In six years we have come to love New Ulm. We've made friendships and enjoyed many wonderful times because of the Blast. This was our first Blast without Bobbi greeting us at the back door of The Bohemian with a beer and a hug. We are going to miss her and those darling girls. It was very strange, but knowing Bobbi would want us to press on, we will keep our memories of her close to our hearts and come to New Ulm as often as possible.

This past fall we brought our German exchange student through New Ulm, and she loved it. We would have never discovered all the wonderful and interesting things about New Ulm if it weren't for Bavarian Blast. I love that there are always new things to discover every time we come down.

I wanted to let everyone connected to Bavarian Blast know how much their hard work is valued, and the impact of it goes well beyond the fair-ground gates. Hundreds of hours by many people all year long go into an event like this, in addition to their jobs and family obligations, and the effort shows. The Blast means a lot to us personally, and we wish nothing but continued success for it in the future.

Warmest regards,

Sonya and Travis Calef
