NEW ULM - Ted and Jodi Marti received a much-deserved award Monday when they were named the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee's "Tourism Person of the Year" for 2011.
The awards was presented by Tourism Committee President Trudy Beranek at the Brewery Museum at Schell's Brewery.
"It's a nice surprise. We've been busy up to our eyeballs with projects here, so it's a nice surprise," said Ted Marti.

Ted and Jodi Marti received the New Ulm Chamber of Commerce Tourism Committee’s “Tourism Person of the Year” award Monday from Tourism Committee President Trudy Beranek.
Criteria for winning the award includes association with an attraction, business, organization or festival that is, or was, a member of the Chamber at the time of their involvement.
The winner must have demonstrated leadership and innovation with the tourism industry of New Ulm. Additionally, the winner's length of service is considered.
Beranek praised the ever-increasing popularity of Schell's Brewery as a tourist site.
"The most frequent question tourists ask is 'Where's the Brewery?' and 'What time are the tours?'" said Beranek.
She highlighted the tourist draw that Brewery has, noting how more than 35,000 people go on brewery tours each year and approximately 6,000 people attend the annual Bock Fest.
She also noted that the Convention and Visitors Bureau has recently adopted a new tag line: "New Ulm - Come See What's Brewing."
Ted Marti said that he was pleased they received the award but that they did not seek it.
"We just want to see New Ulm prosper and become an even bigger tourist attraction," said Marti, "We're constantly look at new ways to bring people to town."
Ted has been president of August Schell's Brewing Company since 1985 and is a descendant of its founder August Schell. He has served several terms on the New Ulm Convention and Visitors Board. He has also served on the boards of Heritagefest, Bavarian Blast, Turnverein and the Brown County Agricultural Society.
Jodi has worked at the brewery since 1992, initially as the manager of the Museum and the Gift Shop. Currently she is the brewery's Special Project Coordinator. She has also served on the Convention and Visitor Bureau board. She is the past chair of the Tourism Committee and is currently serving on the Commerce Board.
Previous winners of the award were Don Veigel of the Kaiserhoff in 2010 and Leo Berg of Heritagefest in 2009.
