HONU cookoff: And the winner is...

Salmon, salad wins cooking contest

NEW ULM - Healthy eating enthusiasts got a mouthful and variety to boot Saturday at the Heart of New Ulm (HONU) culinary cooking competition and food expo at the New Ulm Community Center.

After more than 250 visited a food expo, the CompEAT cooking competition began.

A couple good friends, Leah Peck of New Ulm and Tricia Wolff of Mankato won a $50 gift card with their entries - Asian glaze Salmon and chopped salad.

Heart of New Ulm employee Raquel Perieira of Minneapolis may have described the winning food the best.

"The flavors exploded in your mouth," Periera said. "Plus it looked attractive."

Other contest entries included steamed Halibut on Mediterranean vegetables with Parmesan Polenta, ginger citrus salad dressing, breakfast fruit, pine nut pancakes and chicken crescents in peace sauce.

Barb Puchner of New Ulm said she joined HONO when it began a couple years ago.

"It's good for the community," she said. "Healthy cooking tips, neighborhood walking groups and on the bike trail help me feel good."

Rebeccah Fliszar, registered dietician for HONO, thanked the local restaurants, food groups and other vendors for making the food expo popular.

The next HONO event is the Heart-Healthy Potluck, 5:30-7 P.M., Thursday, Nov. 11 at German Park.

Participants are asked to bring heart-healthy dishes to pass including fruits, vegetables and recipes to share.
