Blood drives coming up in area

NEW ULM - The American Red Cross is asking people to think about giving blood, especially at this time of year when the blood supply is particularly vulnerable t.

Upcoming Blood Donation Opportunities: In Brown County there will be a blood drive from 1-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 417 S. Minnesota St.; from 1-7 p.m. Oct. 18 Martin Luther College's student center; 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 23 Cathedral High School New Ulm.

In Sibley County: from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5 at Sibley Medical Center, 601 W. Chandler St., Arlington.

In Watonwan County: 1:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 9 at Madelia High School, 320 Buck Ave. SE, Madelia and also 7:30-11:30 a.m. Nov. 25 St. James National Guard Training and Community Center in St. James.

In Nicollet County: 1:30-7:30 p.m. Nov. 24 American Legion Hall in Nicollet and also from 1-7 p.m. Nov. 29 Lafayette Charter School in Lafayette.

Redwood County: from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Nov. 23 Cedar Mountain High School in Morgan and also from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 26 Assembly of God Church in Redwood Falls.

CAST Workshop of Quilting planned

NEW ULM - The C.A.S.T. Workshop of Quilting meets from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. (noon) on Wednesday, Nov. 10 in the District 88 Administrative Center, 15 N. State.

Participants should park in the lot on Washington St. and enter through door # 4. Volunteers are welcome to cut, sew and tie quilts. Donations of fabric, yarn and thread are always appreciated. This program is sponsored by Community and Seniors Together. These quilts can be purchased for a set donation to Senior programming and are also donated throughout our local counties to families with needs. Heartland Express runs on Veterans Day

NEW ULM - The Brown County Heartland Express will be operating and the Transit Office will be open on Thursday, Nov. 11, Veterans Day.

Pianist Ralph Votapek Returns to Bethany

MANKATO Pianist Ralph Votapek returns to the Bethany campus for another recital in Bethany Guest Artist on Sunday, November 7 at 7 p.m. in Trinity Chapel.

Votapek's program on November 7 will include Sonata in A minor, K 310 by Mozart, Barcarolle, Op. 60 and Andante Spianato & Grand Polonaise, Op 22 by Chopin, Suite Begamausque by Debussy, Iberia, Book One by Albeniz, and Variations, Op. 41 by Kapustin.

Tickets will be available at the door. $8 for adults, $5 for children, students K-college and seniors (55+).

St. John's of Searles to host 21st Annual cookie bake

SEARLES - St. John's of Searles will hold its 21st annual cookie bake with order forms available beginning Nov. 1.

The dates for the cookie bake are Dec. 4 and Dec. 5. There are 19 varieties to choose from, including the traditional and also the family favorites.

Two new varieties offered this year are Raspberry Dreams and gingerbreads. Gift packs are $10 each and order forms may be obtained by calling Carol at 359-4339, Sherry at 354-8029 and Cindy at 276-1812, by email at or by visiting St. John's website at: (orders will be accepted online). Orders will be accepted until Nov. 28. Orders will be ready for pick up from 4-8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4 and from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. noon on Sunday, Dec. 5 at St. John's basement. This is a Catholic Aid Matching Grant fundraiser.

Weber and Kimmel

at the Kabaret

NEW ULM - Lee Weber, a guitarist from Mason City Iowa, will perform this Friday night with special guest, Tim Babel.

Weber is a skilled American finger style guitar player and has played several times at the Grand.

Dick Kimmel and company will perform on Saturday night from 7:30-10:30 p.m. Kimmel and his band are well known for their many old and new bluegrass tunes, gospel and duets performed with Jerilyn Kjellberg. Since the 1970s, Dick Kimmel's fine bands have performed throughout North America and Europe.

NEW ULM - A Current Events Discussion group, sponsored by Community and Seniors Together is being held Friday mornings, from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. at the Senior Center, 600 N. German

The discussion is open to everyone to participate. Community leaders will join us with updates from time to time. Join us and share your opinions of local, national, and international events. The presentation includes large visuals and background information.

Holiday open house scheduled

NEW ULM - MVAC's Thrift & More store in New Ulm is holding a Holiday Open House on November 5, 6 & 7.

Customers can sign up for door prizes and gift certificates or enjoy a glass of apple cider while they hunt for bargains and ideas for Christmas gifts and decorating.

The Open House runs from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 5 & 6 and from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7.

Thrift & More is operated by the local non-profit agency Minnesota Valley Action Council.

WELCA Bazaar and Bake Sale planned

NEW ULM - The WELCA Bazaar and bake sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. noon on Saturday, Nov. 6 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, New Ulm.

Coffee and coffee cakes will be served beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event also features gifts and other items, baked goods, frozen apple pies/crisps, lefse, craft items, and much more.
