NEW ULM - The city of New Ulm will again operate a yard waste compost site for local residents.
The compost site, located on 21st North Street east of Broadway, will open Saturday, April 3, and remain open until weather dictates its closing.
Hours of operation are Mondays through Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. The site will be closed Sundays and holidays. There is no charge for waste drop off.
Grass clippings, leaves and non-woody yard waste will be accepted at the site. No branches, paper, glass, metal or garbage are accepted. However, adjacent to the compost site there is a burn site where branches, sticks, etc. will be accepted.
The city has provided compost service to residents since the Minnesota Legislature mandated the elimination of yard waste dumping in landfills. A composting machine aids the city in creating compost, which is given away at no charge to the public.
Due to the high demand for compost material in 2009, there will not be any compost material ready for pick-up until later in the summer, 2010.
Further information on the compost site can be obtained by calling- 359-8296.
