NEW ULM - Looking for an intriguing, sometimes challenging part-time job?
The Brown County Evaluation Center (BCEC), also referred to as the detox center, is looking for drivers to pick up clients in 11 southern Minnesota counties the facility serves.
As spring approaches and the weather gets warmer, the BCEC tends to get busier.
"People tend to stay home more during the coldest winter months," said New Ulm Detoxification Center Supervisor Ron Krzmarzick.
Vehicles with police car cages are provided.
Pay is $27 per run, which usually last about two hours.
Mankato and St. Peter are some of the most common places to pick up patients.
They are usually driven to the New Ulm Medical Center Emergency Room or the New Ulm detox facility at 510 N. Front St.
Drivers are on-call 24 hours a day. Most runs are made between 5 p.m. and 7 a.m.
Krzmarzick said most runs are made with a driver and a rider.
Drivers and/or rider duties including cleaning up the transport vehicle after each trip.
Applicants must have a clean driving record with no alcohol-related violations for the previous two years.
They must agree to being on call 24 hours a day and be able to get to New Ulm within 20 minutes.
Training, which can be done in-house, includes cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and physical restraint training.
"Retired law enforcement personnel often make good detox drivers. They're used to dealing with intoxicated people," Krzmarzick said.
Several other detox drivers attend college in Mankato.
Any person age 13 or older may request admittance to the detox center as an informal patient for observation, evaluation, diagnosis, care, and treatment.
Other detox patients are admitted due to intoxication or because they experience physical, mental or emotional problems due to withdrawal from alcohol or other drugs. They are held under emergency or commitment holds or need to stay in a protective environment due to a chemical dependency crisis.
