NEW ULM -The New Ulm Cathedral boys basketball team had plenty of chances to put St. Clair away Monday night, but in the end, late mistakes and missed shots hurt the Greyhounds as the Cyclones won the nonconference boys basketball game 48-46.
The Cyclones didn't have their first lead of the game until 5:30 left in the second half when Ryan Strobel hit a free throw. The Greyhounds had the lead three more times after that, but they were unable to hold on as the Cyclones held on for the close win.
Dustin Benning led St. Clair with 16 points and Michael Draeger had 14. Strobel finished with 12 and Brandon Prange added six for the Cyclones.
Alex Cooper led the Greyhounds with 19 points. His shot from just inside the halfcourt line hit the front of the rim as time expired.
Frank Johnson had 10 points and was the only other Greyhounds player in double figures.
The Greyhounds looked strong from the very beginning, jumping out to a 7-0 lead early on. But the Cyclones fought back and tied the game at 8-8 on Benning's 3-pointer.
The Greyhounds went on a mini-run, highlighted by a basket by Brian Nosbush to put Cathedral up 17-12. Once again, the Cyclones fought back and tied the game at 20 and 22 before Johnson's 3-pointer put the Greyhounds ahead 25-22 at halftime.
In the second half, the Greyhounds weren't able to extend the lead by much, but they did manage to lead most of the way.
A 3-pointer from Kevin Larson answered Benning's 3 at the other end and the Greyhounds led 33-29. A basket by Simon put Cathedral up 35-29 with 11:30 left in the game. It was the largest lead of the half for the Greyhounds, but they were unable to hang on.
With 5:30, Strobel's free throw gave the Cyclones their first lead of the game, but a 3 by Cooper put Cathedral ahead 42-40 with 3:40 to play. Cathedral extended the lead to 44-40, but the Greyhounds scored only one more basket the rest of the way. Cathedral plays Madelia at the Nicollet Tournament Monday.
