Winona - Donald R. Savat, 86, formerly of New Ulm completed his circle of life in his home in Winona on December 18, 2009 with his family around him.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, December 22, 2009 at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in New Ulm with Monsignor John A. Richter celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery in New Ulm. Full Military Honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the New Ulm Area Comrades of Valor Honor Guard.

Visitation will be 3 - 6 p.m. Monday and from 7:30 - 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Minnesota Valley Funeral Home in New Ulm. There will be a parish prayer service at 5:30 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. To leave an online condolence for his family or to sign the guestbook go to: www.mvfh.org.

He was born in Lucan to Joseph and Mary (Mahoney) Savat. After high school he joined the Civilian Conservation Corp. and then went into the Navy where he served his country in World War II. He married Charlotte L. Paa on April 23, 1949 in New Ulm and they lived there until 2005 when they moved to Winona to be closer to their son.

Don worked for the US Postal Service for 35 years as a letter carrier in New Ulm. Don was the ultimate handy man and could fix or build nearly anything. His kind, generous spirit was an inspiration for all that knew and loved him.

Don is survived by his wife, Charlotte; son, Mike (Sue) Savat of Winona; daughter, Mary Savat of Manassas, VA; sister, Jo Peterson of Pickney, MI. He has four beloved grandchildren, Jake and Alle Savat and Lindsay and Jackie Savat. Don was preceded in death by his parents; and siblings, Bud, Cecil, Severin, and Zoa.
